Jute sacks


Jute sacks are usually constructed from woven strands of jute. After filling, the necks of the bags are sewn shut by hand or with a stitching machine. Most jute bags have a 100kg or 90kg capacity.  The open weave allows the exchange of gas and moisture between the grain and the surrounding environment as well as entry of insect pests. They should be kept inside a house or grain store, away from walls, and placed on pallets to separate them from the floor.

What to like: Relatively cheap and available on most markets

What to dislike:

Grain stored in jute bags is prone to agents of grain loss such as weevils, larger grain borer, lesser grain borer, rodents.  Moisture can enter the grain easily especially if jute bags are placed in structures not protected from rain.
