Traditional smallholder granaries that have been improved to offer better protection from rodents and water damage. There are 3 common types of improved traditional granaries:
Zimbabwe brick granary: A multi-compartment granary with capacity for 3 tonnes of grain. |
Tanzania kihenge: A large woven basket plastered with a mixture of mud and cow dung, capacity 1 to 5 tonnes. |
Mozambique gorongosa mud silo: A mud brick structure with a loading port at the top and an outlet port, with a capacity of 0.5 to 1.6 tonnes. |
